For those enrolled in national health insurance, a lump sum cash benefit is available in the event that he or she gives birth or passes away.

Lump sum childbirth benefit

The lump sum childbirth benefit pays 500,000 yen per child (except if the birth takes place at a medical institution not enrolled in the Japan Obstetric Compensation System, in which case the benefit pays 488,000 yen ). In general, Takasaki pays this money to the hospital or clinic directly. Any required paperwork is done at the hospital.

In cases where the lump sum benefit was not paid directly, the money will be transferred to the head of household's bank account. The money will either be the full amount, or the difference (if the cost of delivery was less than the full amount).

Funeral expenses benefit

The person who arranged the funeral can receive 50,000 yen to help cover the costs of funeral arrangements. Please bring the necessary items to the Insurance & Pension Division or the Citizens Welfare Division of any branch office.

Necessary items

  • Deceased person's health insurance card or eligibility confirmation document (shikaku kakunin-sho); only if one was issued. If the deceased was also the head of household, then please also submit the above documents for all family members of the household.
  • Photo ID for the person who made the funeral arrangements (if using a proxy service, then that person's photo ID as well)
  • Receipt showing that a funeral was arranged by the person applying for the benefit
  • Documentation that confirms the bank account information of the person who made the funeral arrangements
