Child abuse not only leaves emotional scars for children, it can also cost them their lives. In order to protect them, it is crucial to recognize the signs early and take action right away.

What counts as abuse

Because abuse tends to happen at home, it can be hard to spot from the outside. Parents may only have the intention of disciplining their child, but violent actions and harsh words are also abuse. Examples include:

  • Physical abuse: punching, kicking, hitting, violent shaking
  • Emotional abuse: Verbal threats, giving the cold shoulder, giving preferential treatment to siblings
  • Sexual abuse: Showing or engaging in sexually explicit acts and materials
  • Neglect: Locking them inside the home, not providing food, leaving them inside cars

Consultation hotlines
