Using the My Number card for health insurance

ページID:0078164 更新日:2025年11月27日更新 印刷ページ表示

From December 2nd, 2025 regular health insurance cards have been discontinued. From now on, when seeking medical care or buying medicine please use the My Number card that has been registered as a health insurance card. In Japanese, this is called the "myna hokensho" (マイナ保険証).

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has created multilingual brochures that explain more about the My Number health insurance system. They are available in 14 languages here<外部リンク>.

Registration

There are two ways to register. Please refer to the multilingual brochures mentioned above, as they contain step-by-step pictures to help illustrate what to do.

Registering in person

Please bring the My Number card to a clinic, hospital, or pharmacy.

Registering via phone

Using a smartphone, download the app called "myna portal" (in katakana) from the app store. It will require knowing both the 4 digit pin and the longer password that was used to initially set up the My Number card.

At a clinic or hospital

If using the My Number health insurance card, place it in the card reader installed at the medical institution and input the 4 digit pin.

Note: There may be times when the My Number health insurance card does not work (such as when the card reader malfunctions). It is recommended to also carry the Eligibility Notification of Health Insurance or have the "myna portal" app installed on a smartphone.

When unable to use the My Number card

Everyone can still receive medical care even if unable to use a My Number card.

If the card has been previously registered

For those who have a My Number card and who previously registered it as a health insurance card, a document called an Eligibility Notification of Health Insurance ("shikaku joho no oshirase", 資格情報のお知らせ in Japanese) was mailed in the past. If for any reaon the My Number card is not working, this paper can be used alongside the card to still receive medical care.

Eligibility Notification of Health Insurance

Additionally, with the "myna portal" app there is a downloadable PDF called the "shikauk joho gamen" (資格情報画面); this can be shown with the My Number card to still receive medical care as well.

If the card has not been previously registered

In December 2024, a Health Insurance Eligibility Certificate (called a "shikaku kakuninsho", 資格確認書 in Japanese) was mailed out to all people who did not have a My Number card or who had not yet registered it as a health insurance card. This paper document can be used in place of the My Number card or a health insurance card.
