Starting April 2026, school lunches have been made free for students in public elementary, junior high, and special needs schools. Parents do not need to complete any paperwork for the change to take effect.
There is a new subsidy available to help parents cover the cost of daily packed lunches, whether that is due to their child having allergies/food restrictions, or from being absent frequently from school.
The subsidy is equivalent to 5,200 yen multiplied by the number of months bringing a packed lunch. It will be capped at 11 months.
The subsidy is paid via the digital currency called "taka tsuka" which can be used at shops in Takasaki. For more information about how to redeem and use "taka tsuka" please see the city website here (Japanese only).
