Designated evacuation shelters in Takasaki

There are instances when you may need to temporarily evacuate due to a natural disaster. You cannot predict when a disaster will strike so it is better to always be prepared. First, be sure to check where you can evacuate to in the event of an emergency.

Designated evacuation shelters

There are evacuation shelters around the city called "shitei hinan-jo" (指定避難所) in Japanese. These are places that Takasaki has deemed safe to use in the event of a natural disaster. If such an emergency occurs, please evacuate to the nearest shelter. However, not all shelters are equally safe from all types of disasters. Which shelter can be used will depend on the type of disaster that occurs (storm, flood, landslide, or earthquake). For those with pets

Pets should be kept at home whenever it is possible to do so. In the event of a natural disaster, owners are permitted to evacuate with their pets. However, please note that animals are not allowed inside the evacuation shelters. Each shelter will have a designated outdoor spot to place pets kept in carriers or cages. Owners are fully responsible for feeding and cleaning up after their pets.

Vehicular evacuation sites

Besides the designated evacuation shelters, Takasaki also has vehicular evacuation sites, which are called "shachu hinan-jo" (車中避難所) in Japanese. These are sites where residents can evacuate by car. There are various reasons why someone might utilize them instead of a shelter, including privacy concerns or those who wish to stay with their pets. Warning

Vehicular evacuation sites are not always staffed for the entire duration of a disaster. If it is necessary to stay there long term, emergency supplies will be distributed. These sites are however equipped with restrooms that can be used anytime. Please keep in mind that there are times when it is dangerous to evacuate by car, so it is important to plan accordingly. 

In addition, try to avoid getting sick during a disaster. Common ailments that occur include: 

• Deep vein thrombosis (blood clots), AKA economy class syndrome (due to sitting in the same position for extended periods of time)
• Heat stroke (requires temperature and humidity control inside the car)
• Carbon monoxide poisoning (it is unsafe to leave the engine and air conditioner running for extended periods of time)
