Takasaki mails a notice about residence tax every June. It contains information about how much money you will owe for the upcoming year. Certain low-income households (called 非課税, hikazei in Japanese), are exempt from paying residence tax and therefore do not receive any notice in the mail.
There are 2 different ways to pay residence tax.
For regular collection, payments are made four times a year in June, August, October, and January of the following year. Because there are fewer payments in total, each payment is a little more expensive.
Regular collection is managed through the city, so Takasaki sends out the bills along with the residence tax notice in June. Be sure to pay each bill before the deadline. These bills can be paid at a convenience store or you can set up auto payments with the city.
For special collection, payments are made every month, as they are taken from your salary by your employer. Compared to regular collection, payments are more frequent in total, so each payment is a little cheaper. Your employer should give you a notice about it.
